With a press conference at its headquarters, UNICEF will release its flagship report focussing on the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by the United Nations General Assembly the day before the anniversary itself. The Convention is the first legally binding international convention to affirm human rights for all children. Since 1989, the CRC has achieved near-universal acceptance, having now been ratified by 193 parties – more than belong to the United Nations or have acceded to the Geneva Conventions.
Thursday, 19 November at 9:30 a.m. at UNICEF Headquarters on 44th Street in Manhattan, Ann M. Veneman, UNICEF Executive Director, Lucy Liu, UNICEF Ambassador and actor and Grace Akallo, former child youth activist and former child soldier will discuss the special edition of the agency’s widely-quoted annual publication, State of the World’s Children which this year will focus on the impact the CRC has had on the lives of millions of children and challenges moving forward.
Friday, 20 November a commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the CRC will be held in the Trusteeship Council in the United Nations Headquarters from 10:00 to 12 noon.
