This past Sunday, November 15, 2009, Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador experienced the Olympic spirit as they hosted the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Torch Relay, which was a great success. The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay is the longest relay held in history, and will visit over 1,000 communities and places of interest as 12,000 torchbearers carry it on its 45,000 kilometer journey.

The Canadian Diabetes Association is proud to celebrate the efforts and accomplishments of the group of 20 “Diabetes Motivators” who participated in the relay and who each display on-going commitment to healthy living and to building healthy, thriving communities.

Advocates such as Carla Wells and Dwight Ball work to raise awareness of the seriousness of diabetes and its costly complications, helping improve diabetes policies and ensuring access to quality care.

Volunteers such as Jerry Young, our past Chair of Board of Directors, Penny Pike and Sheila Allen dedicate countless hours to bring greater awareness about chronic disease prevention and management, and tips for living a healthy life with diabetes and how to avoid complications.

The Association’s youth campers Sarah Pieroway, Jade Parsons and Mark Thompson provide a positive role model to their peers by being active and encouraging those around them to make healthy choices.

Dr. Brent Thistle, Helen McCarthy and Rhonda Terry aim to help patients develop the skills and knowledge that will enable them to live healthy active lives.
